When taking to the road during the summer months, there are a variety of steps you can take to improve your safety and reduce the risk of being part of a motor vehicle accident.

Even though you have no control over other drivers or the weather, here are some tips that will keep you safe and give you peace of mind:

  • Obey the rules of the road: This is priority number one at all times of the year, as violating the law increases the risk of an accident. For example, if you’re traveling on the highway and in a hurry, you may realize your speed creeping to a dangerous level. In this case, make note of the speed limit and follow it.
  • Keep an eye on other drivers: When the weather is nice, more people take to the road. Furthermore, with school out for the summer, more young drivers are behind the wheel. As you’re doing your part to maintain your safety, always watch for other drivers who may be acting in a negligent manner.
  • Watch the sky: The summer months are sure to bring warmer temperatures, but you also have to concern yourself with heavy rain and strong winds. Also, sun glare is a common concern when driving in the summer.
  • Watch for animals: Animals are just as dangerous as other drivers, as you never know when something will run out in front of your vehicle. For instance, if you’re driving on the highway, a deer could sprint out in front of you, giving you little to no time to adjust your course of travel. Not only is there a chance that you’ll strike the animal, but it could also cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

It’s a must that you follow these summer driving safety tips, as you want to reduce your risk of trouble on the road.

Should a negligent driver cause an accident, move to safety and assess yourself for injuries. This will help you decide what to do next, with a call to 911 typically the right choice.

Once you’re on the path to recovery, review your insurance policy, file a claim and take every step possible to protect your legal rights.
