When you entrust your beloved relative to a nursing home or assisted living facility, the last thing you’d expect to find is their picture splashed all over social media — especially when they’re being mocked and assaulted for someone’s amusement.
Unfortunately, that sort of thing happens far too often. While the physical abuse is often limited in these cases, the emotional abuse a senior suffers can be severe — and it can have a hugely detrimental effect on the senior’s health.
For example, this past August, an Illinois nursing home employee thought it was funny to taunt a 91-year-old woman and posted the video of her reaction on Snapchat. In September, two Ohio nursing home assistants thought it was entertaining to spray hairspray in the face of a 94-year-old woman and upload the video (also to Snapchat). The duo can be heard laughing as the woman struggles with the hairspray in her eyes and mouth.
Incidents like these do not happen in a vacuum. When the managerial oversight in a nursing home or other care facility is not sufficient, it becomes easy for employees to take advantage of the elderly residents for their own amusement or gain.
Your elderly relative is entitled to proper care and respectful treatment. Being taunted, terrorized and threatened for entertainment and then mocked on social media for someone’s sick enjoyment is emotional abuse to the extreme — even if your relative suffered no lasting physical harm.
